IEC 61010-2-051:2018 Laboratory Mixing and Stirring Equipment

A reliable mixture starts with a safe stirring setup
IEC 61010-2-051:2018 addresses electrically powered laboratory mixers, stirrers and their accessories. It covers mechanical action that changes a material’s shape, size or uniformity. Heating may also be included. Apply this part alongside IEC 61010-1: the particular requirements build on the general safety framework.
Look beyond the speed display
Where a single fault in electronic speed control could create a hazard, the equipment must interrupt power or otherwise prevent that hazard. Good speed regulation describes normal operation; it does not establish what happens when the control fails.
Ask what a claimed torque control feature actually does. Some instruments provide automatic shutdown for a blocked impeller or a selected torque limit. Others have different arrangements. Do not assume that every torque display is a protective function, or that this standard assigns one universal trip setting.
What happens when stirring stops?
Applicable instructions must address securing the vessel and restart behaviour after an interruption. Restarting can be hazardous; in some processes, remaining stopped can also be hazardous. Read the documented behaviour rather than assuming a universal rule. Unexpected start-up deserves particular attention during tool changes and cleaning.
If a protective interlock is part of the design, ISO 13849 and IEC 62061 provide possible approaches to evaluating its safety-related control. The required performance follows the risk assessment; it cannot be inferred from the instrument’s name.
Heating and hazardous liquids need their own review
A heated stirrer also calls for consideration of IEC 61010-2-010. Intended use with flammable, hazardous or toxic liquids requires a specific risk assessment. Compliance with IEC 61010 alone does not establish suitability for an explosive atmosphere. Review ATEX requirements and the relevant area classification separately.
A practical example: the same volume, a different load
Illustrative scenario: Replace water with a much thicker product while keeping the vessel volume unchanged. The torque demand may rise beyond the instrument’s capability, even though its advertised litre rating looks sufficient. Check permitted viscosity, tool size and vessel arrangement. A higher speed command cannot increase the equipment’s mechanical capacity.
Make the documentation part of the purchase
Request a declaration of conformity, safety evaluation and operating instructions that identify the exact model. Confirm permitted accessories, media, protective functions and restart behaviour. IEC 61326-1 addresses EMC emissions and immunity; that evidence serves a different purpose from an equipment safety assessment.
