Voltage regulators

Voltage regulators used to stabilise the mains supply voltage

Voltage regulators maintain output voltage within specified limits as mains voltage rises or falls. For residential, commercial and industrial applications, selection depends on the supply configuration, mains voltage variations and connected load.

Choosing a voltage regulator

Consider the single-phase or three-phase input and output configuration, nominal voltage, input operating range and apparent power rating (kVA) together. Motor and compressor loads require assessment of starting current; electronic loads also require consideration of power factor and current characteristics. Avoid sizing solely by total wattage or a fixed capacity multiplier.

Compare servo, relay-based and static types by correction speed, output accuracy, maintenance requirements and operating environment. Check the product documentation for available capacity at low input voltage and overload limits. A regulator does not provide power during an outage; consider a UPS when backup is required. Surge protection and energy savings should not be assumed for every model.
