what is EN ISO 13849?

Hi everyone,

EN ISO 13849 is a technical standard that specifies safety requirements for control systems used in machinery. It is an international standard that is based on the ISO 13849 standard and is adopted as a European standard (EN).

The standard provides a method for assessing the performance level of control systems and for determining the appropriate safety measures to be implemented. It applies to the design, installation, and maintenance of control systems for machinery, and it covers both pneumatic and electronic control systems. The standard also specifies the requirements for software and hardware, including the use of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS) and safety-related control systems (SRCS).

EN ISO 13849 provides a framework for risk assessment and risk reduction, and it helps ensure that machinery is designed, installed, and maintained in a safe manner. It is widely used in many different industries, such as automotive, food, chemical, and construction.

Types of EN ISO 13849:
EN ISO 13849 has two main categories:

Category 1: This category is intended for simple machinery and systems with a low level of risk. It is based on the principles of design, installation, and maintenance to ensure that the machinery is safe to use.

Category 3: This category is intended for machinery and systems with a higher level of risk. It is based on the principles of design, installation, and maintenance, as well as the use of safety-related parts of control systems (SRP/CS) and safety-related control systems (SRCS) to ensure that the machinery is safe to use.

Each category has different requirements and performance levels that must be met. The specific requirements and performance levels are defined in the standard and are determined by the risk assessment process. The standard also provides a method for determining the appropriate safety measures to be implemented based on the category and performance level.

Another way of classifying the standard is according to the Performance Level (PL), which is a measure of the safety performance of a control system. There are four different performance levels that can be achieved: PLa, PLb, PLc, and PLd, with PLd being the highest level of safety performance.
