What is Softstarter?

Soft starters are devices used to reduce the sudden inrush current and mechanical stress that occur during the start-up of AC motors. They are a practical solution to extend motor lifespan and protect mechanical equipment.
Soft starters gradually increase the motor voltage to provide a smooth start. This method delivers energy savings and less mechanical stress, especially in large motors.
Soft starter circuits limit the motor’s starting current and stabilize the supply voltage. As a result, power quality is preserved and sudden voltage fluctuations in the system are prevented.
Soft Starter – Smooth Start with Voltage Ramp (Live Simulation)
Purpose: Visualize how a gradual supply voltage ramp produces a smooth motor acceleration. Use Start / Stop and adjust Ramp Time to see the effect on the live chart.
Note: The soft starter ramps supply voltage, so inrush current and mechanical shock drop. In the chart, voltage rises first; motor speed follows with a first-order lag — that is the smooth start.
Quick Tech: Voltage ramps linearly in t_ramp. Due to the electrical-mechanical time constant τ, speed approaches its target with delay. The chart shows speed trailing voltage.
However, a soft starter is only active during motor start and stop. Once the motor reaches its nominal speed, the device disengages and the motor operates as if directly connected to the mains. It is insufficient where continuous speed and torque control is required.
At this point, variable frequency drives (VFDs) come into play. VFDs not only control motor start-up but also manage the entire operating process. By adjusting voltage and frequency, they precisely control motor speed and torque.
VFDs allow the motor to run at its optimum speed based on load. This provides both energy efficiency and reduces mechanical wear. In fans, pumps, and conveyors, efficiency can be significantly improved.

Additionally, with a VFD the motor direction can be easily changed, acceleration and deceleration ramps can be adjusted, and precise control tailored to process requirements can be achieved. These features are not available in soft starters.
Soft starters are a low-cost solution and suitable for simpler applications. However, when energy efficiency and process flexibility are required, VFDs are a much more advantageous choice.
In conclusion, while soft starters are ideal for reducing starting shocks, VFDs stand out in modern industry with their higher efficiency, energy savings, and process optimization advantages.
