The term "robot" was first introduced by Czech playwright Karel Čapek in his 1920 play "R.U.R." (Rossum's Universal Robots). Čapek derived this term from the Czech word "robota", which means "forced labor" or "work". The play features artificially created worker beings that resemble humans but eventually rebel.
The term "robotics" was derived from "robot" and refers to the branch of engineering and science concerned with the design, construction, operation, and application of robots. This term was first used by American science fiction writer Isaac Asimov in his short story "Liar!" in 1941. Asimov also proposed the "Three Laws of Robotics" to govern the behavior of robots.
The Three Laws of Robotics, as defined by Isaac Asimov in his short story "Runaround" in 1942, are as follows:
1- A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2- A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3- A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Asimov's Laws of Robotics play a significant role in many science fiction works and often form a central theme in these types of stories. However, applying these laws to real-world robots presents a number of challenges from both a technological and ethical standpoint.
