What is the difference between a robot and a machine?

Hello dear colleagues

The terms "robot" and "machine" are often used interchangeably, but there are important differences between them.

A machine is a device that is designed to perform a specific task or set of tasks. This can range from simple tools like a hammer or a wheel, to more complex devices like a car or a computer. Machines follow predetermined rules and sequences, and while some may have automated elements, they don't have the ability to autonomously adapt their behavior based on their environment or learning.

A robot, on the other hand, is a type of machine that contains sensors, actuators, and a control system (often a computer) that enables it to interact with its environment and perform tasks autonomously or semi-autonomously. Robots often have the ability to perceive their environment, make decisions, and carry out actions independently. Some robots can also learn from their experiences and adjust their behavior accordingly.

In other words, all robots are machines, but not all machines are robots. The distinguishing feature of a robot is its level of autonomy and the ability to interact with its environment in a dynamic way, which many machines do not possess.
