What types of projects can be developed with CODESYS?

Managing a machine’s sequence, motion and data

Hello, CODESYS can be used to develop control and automation projects ranging from simple pump control to machines requiring coordinated motion. Common tasks include reading inputs, evaluating operating conditions, controlling outputs and monitoring operating information. The application’s scope depends on the selected controller and connected equipment as well as the software.

What should be defined before development?

When creating a project, first define the I/O count, analog measurements, motion axes, cycle requirements and operator interface. Then select suitable hardware, a compatible runtime, communication interfaces and required licenses. A function appearing in the CODESYS feature list does not mean that every PLC provides it.

Manufacturing, assembly and packaging machines

Sequential control applications can handle conveyors, part counting, sorting, filling and packaging. For example, a conveyor stops when a box reaches a sensor, filling begins, and the completed box moves to the next station. This sequence is implemented through PLC programming, while shared station logic can be organized into function blocks. Waiting periods and fault conditions also form part of the operating sequence.

Servo, CNC and robotic applications

Suitable motion components enable projects involving axis positioning, electronic cams, synchronized motion, CNC paths and robot kinematics. A labeling axis, for example, can follow product speed, or a handling mechanism can move between defined positions. Select the servo motor, drive, feedback and communication support together. CODESYS SoftMotion and related CNC/robotics options require appropriate target support and licensing; task timing also affects motion performance.

Pumping, water and treatment systems

Control projects can manage tank levels, line pressure, pump sequencing and operating-hour balancing. In a two-pump station, for example, the lead pump alternates and the assisting pump starts when demand increases. Constant-pressure control may use a suitable PID controller and variable frequency drive. The PLC generates the speed reference; the drive supplies electrical power to the motor. Dry running, measurement faults and communication loss require defined responses.

Food processing, dosing and recipe-based production

Recipes can manage production settings for mixing, weighing-based filling, temperature monitoring and batch sequences. Quantity, temperature and duration can be stored as separate parameters for a mixture. Choose appropriate data types and engineering units; calculations can be organized in Structured Text where useful. Automation helps execute the defined process, while product quality depends on more than the program running successfully.

Building automation and HVAC

Applications can cover heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting and room control. An air-handling unit, for example, can measure temperature, control dampers and valves, and evaluate fan operating conditions. Time schedules and occupancy conditions can select different operating settings. Check the required protocols and network capabilities against the target device when connecting to building systems.

Energy monitoring and renewable installations

Projects can provide meter reading, generation and consumption monitoring, load management and remote-station supervision. Measurements from compatible equipment in a solar or wind installation can be collected, and permitted operating commands sent to the relevant devices. Data exchange uses protocols supported by the connected equipment. A CODESYS control application does not automatically replace power-conversion or grid-protection equipment.

Agriculture and mobile machinery

Other examples include irrigation-zone selection, greenhouse ventilation, crop sorting and mobile-machine control. Mobile applications can coordinate sensors, hydraulic equipment and operator displays. Programming support alone is insufficient: the controller’s supply requirements, temperature range, vibration resistance and connections must suit the machine. A project running on a desktop computer does not demonstrate hardware suitability for mobile machinery.

Logistics and centralized monitoring

Warehouse conveyors, transfer stations and material-handling lines can use local control and coordination between stations. Operator screens can display operating states, counters and faults. Larger installations can transfer information to a SCADA system through suitable communication interfaces. Local control, the operator interface and centralized plant monitoring perform different tasks.

From a working example to a completed project

Completing a project involves more than testing its normal sequence. Also test power interruption and restoration, sensor faults, communication loss and restart behavior. Observe results with the debugging tools and configure access permissions and communication security. A useful handover includes clear documentation, version information, backups and the project files needed for maintenance alongside the application.
