What is FCC Standard?

Hi everyone,

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency of the United States government that regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable. The FCC's standards are designed to ensure that electronic and telecommunications equipment does not interfere with other devices and communications, maintains a certain level of safety, and operates within specific technical parameters.

The FCC has established various standards, which are often referred to as "FCC standards," that cover a wide range of aspects related to electronic devices and communication systems. These standards are categorized into different parts under the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 47. Some of the key FCC standards include:

Part 15: This is one of the most well-known FCC standards, which deals with radio frequency devices. It sets limits on the amount of electromagnetic interference (EMI) that devices can emit and establishes guidelines for devices that intentionally emit radio frequencies, such as Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, and remote controls. Part 15 also covers unintentional radiators, such as computers and digital electronics, which must not emit interference above certain levels.

Part 18: This standard focuses on industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) equipment that generates and uses radio frequency energy for purposes other than communication, such as microwave ovens, industrial heaters, and medical diathermy machines. It sets limits on the emissions from these devices to prevent interference with radio communications.

Part 22: This part regulates public mobile services, including cellular telephone systems. It specifies technical standards, licensing requirements, and operational guidelines for these services.

Part 24: This standard covers personal communications services (PCS), which include digital cellular services, messaging services, and mobile data services. It establishes technical specifications and licensing rules for PCS providers.

Part 25: This part governs satellite communications, including satellite earth stations and space stations. It sets technical standards, licensing procedures, and operational rules for satellite services.

Part 27: This standard is for wireless communications services (WCS), which include various types of wireless broadband and mobile services. It outlines the technical specifications, licensing requirements, and operational guidelines for WCS providers.

Part 68: This standard applies to the connection of terminal equipment to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). It establishes technical criteria to ensure that equipment connected to the PSTN does not harm the network or degrade service.

Part 90: This part regulates private land mobile radio services, which include two-way radio communications used by businesses, public safety agencies, and other entities. It sets technical standards, licensing requirements, and operational rules for these services.

Part 95: This standard covers personal radio services, which include citizen band radio, family radio service, and general mobile radio service. It establishes technical specifications and operational guidelines for these services.

Compliance with FCC standards is mandatory for electronic and telecommunications equipment sold or used in the United States. Manufacturers and importers must ensure that their products meet the relevant FCC standards before they can be marketed or sold. This often involves testing the products in accredited laboratories and obtaining certification or self-declaring compliance through a Supplier's Declaration of Conformity (SDoC). Compliance with FCC standards helps to prevent interference between devices, ensures the safety of users, and maintains the integrity of communication networks.
