ABB ACS355 General Machinery Drive

ABB ACS355 is a compact machinery drive developed mainly for machine builders and OEM applications. On a production machine, installation and commissioning time matter just as much as the drive specification itself. ACS355 was designed with this in mind.

Typical applications include conveyors, mixers, packaging machines, material handling, textile machinery, printing equipment, plastics, rubber processing and woodworking machines.

For a simple machine it can be used as a straightforward speed controller. Where the application is more demanding, the same drive also provides sensorless vector control, V/F control, sequence programming and several fieldbus options.

Main ACS355 features

FlashDrop: Parameter sets can be prepared and loaded without powering the drive. This is particularly useful when several identical machines are being built with the same basic settings.

Application macros and commissioning assistants: Common machine configurations can be set up without starting every job from an empty parameter list.

Safe Torque Off: The ACS355 includes Safe Torque Off as a standard safety function. The machine safety circuit still needs to be designed according to the relevant ACS355 safety documentation.

Built-in brake chopper: For machines that need short stopping times or frequent braking, the internal brake chopper can be used with a correctly selected braking resistor.

Compact cabinet installation

The compact and fairly uniform frame design makes the ACS355 practical where several drives have to fit into the same electrical cabinet. Side-by-side and alternative mounting arrangements also help when panel space is tight.

For a one-off machine this may not sound important, but on a panel containing six or ten drives, a few centimetres quickly matter.

Sequence programming and PLC integration

The ACS355 can handle a number of simple operating sequences internally. This can reduce the amount of external PLC logic needed for straightforward machine functions.

For larger machines, the drive can be integrated into the main automation system through optional fieldbus modules.

Speed Compensated Stop

Material-handling and conveyor applications sometimes need the machine to stop at a repeatable point even when operating speed changes. The ACS355 includes Speed Compensated Stop for this type of application.

It is one of those functions that may look minor in a specification sheet but can save extra sensors or PLC work on the right machine.

High-protection versions

For machinery installed in more demanding environments, ACS355 versions with higher enclosure protection are available. The source material includes IP66/IP67 and UL Type 4X variants.

Always check the exact type code before assuming that a standard cabinet version has the same environmental rating.

FlashDrop and DriveWindow Light

FlashDrop is useful for fast preconfiguration without powering the drive. DriveWindow Light can be used from a PC for parameter setting, monitoring and graphical sequence programming.

For a machine builder producing the same panel repeatedly, these tools are much more useful than they are on a single replacement job.

EMC filters and input chokes

External EMC filters and input chokes can be selected according to the drive size, supply system and installation requirements. These parts should be selected from the actual drive type code rather than only from the motor kW.

Control panel options

The ACS355 can be supplied with different control-panel arrangements depending on how much local access is required.

Basic Control Panel

The basic panel has a single-line numeric display. It can be used for normal drive control, parameter setting and parameter transfer between compatible drives.

Assistant Control Panel

The Assistant Control Panel has a multilingual alphanumeric display, commissioning assistants and built-in help. It also includes a real-time clock that can be useful for fault logging.

Parameters can be backed up to the panel and transferred to another compatible drive. If several identical ACS355 units are installed on the same machine, that is a simple but useful service feature.

MPOT-01 potentiometer

MPOT-01 combines a speed potentiometer with start/stop and forward/reverse switches. No separate external supply is required for the potentiometer.

Panel mounting kits

Where the keypad has to be installed on the front of a larger enclosure, panel mounting kits are available.

ACS/H-CP-EXT provides a straightforward remote-panel mounting arrangement. OPMP-01 uses a panel platform that allows the keypad to be removed in a similar way to a drive-mounted panel.
