What is the difference between an Ethernet switch and a hub?

Ethernet switches and hubs are networking devices that allow devices within a local area network (LAN) to connect to each other. However, they differ significantly in their operation and intended use. Here are the main differences between the two:
Mode of Operation:
Hub: A hub broadcasts every data packet it receives to all its ports. In other words, it broadcasts data from one device to all other devices.
Switch: A switch knows which port is associated with which MAC address of a device. Therefore, it directs data coming from one device only to the port where the destination device is connected.
Data Traffic:
Hub: Only allows data transmission between two devices at a time. If two devices try to send data simultaneously, a collision occurs.
Switch: Allows multiple data transmissions, so collisions between devices are eliminated.
Bandwidth Utilization:
Hub: Since it broadcasts data to all ports, bandwidth is not utilized efficiently.
Switch: Since it sends data only to the target port, bandwidth is utilized more efficiently.
Security:
Hub: Because it sends data to all ports, a malicious individual trying to sniff network traffic can easily capture all data on the network.
Switch: Since it sends data only to the destination port, sniffing the network traffic becomes more challenging.
Cost:
Hub: Generally cheaper than switches, but the use of hubs has significantly decreased in modern networking.
Switch: More expensive but offers better and more flexible network performance.
Technology:
Hub: Hubs are essentially older technology and are rarely used in modern networks.
Switch: Switches are a fundamental component of modern Ethernet networks and offer more advanced features compared to hubs.
In summary, while Ethernet switches and hubs perform the same basic function, switches provide more efficient, flexible, and secure network performance. As a result, switches are the preferred choice in modern network configurations.
