INVT Goodrive20 (GD20) Variable Frequency Drive

INVT Goodrive20 is a compact VFD platform developed for general industrial machinery where simple installation, sensorless motor control and a useful set of built-in automation functions are required. GD20 drives can be used in standalone motor-control systems as well as machines integrated into wider industrial automation architectures.

One of the main strengths of the GD20 family is its combination of sensorless vector control and conventional V/F control. This makes it suitable for applications ranging from basic pumps, fans and conveyors to machines where better low-speed torque and load response are required.

Sensorless Vector and V/F Motor Control

GD20 supports PG-free vector control, allowing the drive to regulate the motor without requiring an encoder for standard sensorless applications.

For simpler loads, conventional V/F scalar control can also be used. Multi-point V/F curves allow the motor voltage/frequency characteristic to be adapted to the connected machine.

The drive also supports motor parameter identification functions that can improve motor-control performance when the motor nameplate data has been entered correctly.

Compact Mechanical Design

The smaller GD20 models are designed for installations where panel space is limited. Models up to approximately 2.2 kW use a compact enclosure and can be installed closely together where the mounting conditions permit.

Higher-power GD20 units use a separate cooling-air arrangement intended to keep heat-producing sections away from the control electronics and improve thermal management inside industrial panels.

DC Reactor and Braking Arrangement

On the higher-power section of the GD20 range, 18.5–110 kW models use a built-in DC reactor. This helps improve the input-current characteristics of the drive and reduces the need for additional external components in many installations.

For the braking circuit, the 18.5–37 kW models include the braking unit as standard, while the 45–110 kW models can use an optional built-in braking unit. The required braking resistor must be selected according to motor power, load inertia, deceleration time and braking frequency.

Common DC Bus Capability

GD20 drives in the 380 V class from 4 kW and above can support common DC-bus applications. This can be useful on machines containing several drives where energy exchange between accelerating and decelerating axes is part of the system design.

Common DC-bus systems require correct protection, pre-charge and braking design and should not be treated as a simple parallel connection between drives.

External Keypad and Parameter Copying

An external LED keypad can be used with the GD20. A keypad with parameter copy functions can upload drive settings and transfer them to another compatible unit.

This is particularly useful on production lines using several drives with similar parameter sets, reducing repetitive commissioning work.

Built-in Automation Functions

The Goodrive20 includes several functions that can reduce the amount of external control hardware required in straightforward applications:

- Basic PLC functions
- Multi-speed operation
- Built-in PID control
- Torque control
- Multi-point V/F curves
- Multiple braking methods
- Functions intended to maintain operation during short power disturbances
- RS485 communication

High-Frequency Motor Applications

The GD20 platform can also be used in selected high-frequency motor applications. Motor type, maximum frequency, current requirements and cooling conditions must be checked carefully before using a standard VFD with a high-speed spindle or similar motor.

GD20 drives are commonly suited to small and medium-power industrial machines where compact size and sensorless control are useful. Typical applications include:

- Conveyors and material-handling systems

When selecting a GD20, consider not only the motor kW rating but also the rated motor current, starting torque, operating speed range, acceleration/deceleration time, braking requirement and expected duty cycle.
