Inovance VFD

Inovance VFD Performance and Control Features

Inovance AC drives are designed for industrial motor control applications requiring reliable speed, torque and process control. Depending on the model and application, Inovance MD series drives can support V/F control, Sensorless Vector Control (SVC) and Vector Control (VC). These control methods allow the same product family to be used in applications ranging from standard pumps and fans to machinery requiring higher torque and dynamic response. For a basic explanation of drive operation, see what is an inverter drive?

V/F Control is a simple and widely used motor-control method. It is particularly suitable for applications where precise torque response is not the main requirement and where straightforward commissioning is preferred. V/F control can be used in many machine and mechanical applications, including machine tools, centrifuges, drawing machines, pumps, fans and injection-molding equipment.

Sensorless Vector Control (SVC) provides improved low-speed torque and speed regulation without requiring an encoder on the motor shaft. By estimating motor operating conditions from electrical measurements, SVC can provide better performance than conventional V/F control when load conditions change. This makes it suitable for applications where stable motor speed and strong low-frequency torque performance are important.

Depending on the specific MD-series model, SVC operation can provide a wide speed-control range and high starting torque at low frequencies. Typical applications include paper-processing machinery, industrial production lines, lifting equipment and other variable-load systems.

Vector Control (VC) is intended for applications requiring higher speed accuracy, stronger dynamic response and more precise torque control. Compared with V/F control and closed-loop control systems, the available performance depends on the selected drive, motor parameters and feedback configuration.

In suitable applications, vector control can provide high torque at very low speed, improved load response and accurate speed regulation. Encoder-feedback models can also provide zero-speed torque holding and precise torque control. These characteristics are useful in hoisting, winding, unwinding, tension control and synchronized machine systems.

Superior Vector Performance can include strong low-frequency torque, rapid response to load changes, high speed-control accuracy and precise synchronization between mechanically related axes. In applications such as winding and unwinding machines, direct torque regulation can also assist with tension control.

Independent Air Ventilation Channel

Selected Inovance MD-series drives use an independent cooling-air channel to separate the heatsink airflow from sensitive electronic sections. Depending on the drive construction and installation method, the heatsink can be positioned inside or outside the electrical cabinet. This arrangement can assist designers when building cabinets requiring higher environmental protection levels such as IP54 protection.

Separating the cooling path can also improve reliability in environments containing dust, fibres or other airborne contaminants. Typical applications include textile, printing and dyeing, paper production, wire drawing and cement-processing machinery. Actual environmental suitability should always be checked against the specifications of the individual drive model.

DC Reactor Support

On applicable MD-series models, particularly at higher power ratings, a DC reactor may be integrated or used as part of the drive installation. A correctly selected reactor can improve the input current waveform, help increase the input-side power factor and reduce the effect of certain harmonic components. It can also contribute to improved electrical and thermal operating conditions of the drive.

DC reactors and other input-side components should be selected according to the drive power, mains characteristics and application requirements. Harmonic mitigation, EMC performance, conduction and radiated interference should therefore be evaluated as part of the complete installation rather than as a property of the inverter alone.

Wide Input Voltage Tolerance

Inovance MD-series drives are designed to tolerate a defined range of mains-voltage variation. Depending on the individual model, the permitted operating range may extend approximately from -15% to +20% around the nominal input voltage. The exact voltage limits must always be confirmed from the technical data of the selected drive.

Self-Check and Protection Functions

During power-up, the drive performs internal checks intended to detect abnormal operating conditions before or during motor operation. These functions form part of the overall machine safety and protection strategy, but they should not be considered a replacement for external safety devices where these are required.

Depending on the model, Inovance drives provide protection and diagnostic functions for conditions such as overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, overheating, motor overload, phase-related faults and communication errors. Some MD-series documentation describes up to 22 fault-protection functions. The available protections and alarm codes vary between models and firmware versions.

Surge and Overcurrent Protection

Inovance drives incorporate internal protection circuits intended to reduce damage caused by abnormal electrical conditions. Protection against severe mains disturbances should nevertheless include correct grounding, fuses or circuit breakers, and where required suitable overcurrent protection, surge protection, reactors and EMC components. Proper panel design remains especially important in installations exposed to switching surges or lightning-related disturbances.

Production and Environmental Protection

The production of industrial drives requires controlled manufacturing, inspection and quality processes. Protective treatments used on electronic assemblies can help reduce the effects of dust, moisture and fungal contamination. Production quality, however, does not eliminate the need for suitable cabinet ventilation, environmental protection and correct installation practices at the machine.

When selecting an Inovance VFD, motor power alone should not be used as the only criterion. Motor rated current, load type, required starting torque, minimum operating speed, braking requirements, encoder feedback, communication protocol and environmental conditions should also be considered. Applications such as elevators, cranes, winding systems and high-dynamic machinery require a different drive-selection approach than conventional pump or fan applications.
