RTDs and thermocouples are not directly interchangeable. RTD wiring (2, 3 or 4 wires), thermocouple type and polarity, or the thermistor's resistance-temperature characteristic must match the temperature controller's input. For products with transmitters, also confirm the output signal, such as 4–20 mA or 0–10 V, and supply requirements. Probe sheath and connection materials must suit the measured medium.

The description should distinguish between used, unused, boxed, repaired, faulty and for-parts items and disclose known measurement errors, probe or sheath damage, cable faults and missing connectors or mounting parts. The test scope, any calibration certificate, warranty and standards compliance claims are based on the selling store's product description. A continuity check is not calibration. Boxed or unused does not mean covered by a warranty.
