What is Current Transformer?

Hi everybody,
A current transformer (CT) is a type of transformer that is used to measure alternating current (AC). It produces a current in its secondary coil which is proportional to the current in its primary coil. Current transformers are commonly used in metering and protective relays in the electrical power industry.
Key Features:
Proportional Output: The secondary current is proportional to the primary current and can be scaled down to a level that is manageable and safe for measurement devices or microprocessor inputs.
Isolation: Provides electrical isolation between the primary circuit (high voltage, high current) and the secondary circuit (measurement devices).
Accuracy: Designed to provide highly accurate transformations for measurement or protective relay applications.
How It Works:
Primary Winding: The primary winding is typically a wire that is part of the circuit in which the current needs to be measured.
Secondary Winding: The secondary winding is usually composed of many turns of wire and is connected to the instruments that measure the current.
Magnetic Core: A magnetic core is used to couple the primary and secondary windings.
Applications:
Power Industry: For metering and protective relays in substations and power plants.
Manufacturing Plants: To monitor power usage and machine health.
Commercial Buildings: For power measurement and safety systems.
Utility Monitoring: In smart grid technologies for real-time monitoring.
Limitations:
Phase Error: The phase difference between the primary and secondary current can introduce errors in some applications.
Limited Range: They are effective within a certain range of current values, outside of which they may not provide accurate readings.
Burden: The measuring instruments connected to the secondary coil can affect the accuracy if they present a significant load (known as "burden").
By accurately measuring high levels of current and providing electrical isolation, current transformers play a crucial role in the safe and efficient operation of power systems.
