What is a triac?

Hello dear friends,

A triac (triode for alternating current) is a three-terminal semiconductor device that can conduct current in both directions (making it bidirectional) when it's triggered. It is essentially an electronic switch for AC systems and is widely used in applications where AC power control is required, such as light dimmers, motor speed controls, and heating controls.

Triacs have three terminals:

    Main Terminal 1 (MT1)
    Main Terminal 2 (MT2)
    Gate (G)

The operation is simple: by applying a small current to the gate terminal, the triac can be made to allow or block current flow between the two main terminals (MT1 and MT2). This makes it useful for controlling larger currents with smaller control signals.

A significant feature of the triac is its ability to control power in both halves of an AC cycle, both the positive and negative portions, which makes it a valuable device for AC power control applications.

However, one should note that while triacs are handy for AC switching, they are not typically used for DC applications because, once triggered, they remain in the 'on' state until the main current drops below a certain threshold, which doesn't occur in a DC circuit.
