What is a hydraulic cylinder and what is its function?

A hydraulic cylinder is a mechanical actuator that is used to give a unidirectional force through a unidirectional stroke. It gets its power from pressurized hydraulic fluid, which is typically oil.

The hydraulic cylinder consists of a cylinder barrel, within which a piston connected to a piston rod moves back and forth. The barrel is closed on one end by the cylinder bottom (also called the cap) and the other end by the cylinder head (also called the gland) where the piston rod comes out of the cylinder. The piston has sliding rings and seals.

Here's a simplified explanation of how it works:

1- Hydraulic fluid is pumped into the cylinder at one side by a pump.

2- The increasing pressure pushes the piston, which is free to move only along the axis of the cylinder.

3- This movement propels the piston rod, which is connected to the load we want to move or lift.

4- The hydraulic fluid is then removed from the cylinder, by being returned to a fluid reservoir.

They're an integral part of hydraulic systems, which use the incompressibility of fluids to produce large amounts of force for mechanical work.
