90 30 Power Supply Modules

Ge fanuc Series 90-30 Power Supplies

The Series 90-30 Power Supplies are essential components used to provide regulated power to the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and its modules. These power supplies come in various configurations, supporting different input voltages such as AC (120/240 VAC) or DC (12/24/48 VDC), and offer different output capacities depending on the specific model. Each power supply is designed to ensure reliable operation under varying conditions, including protection from overvoltage, overcurrent, and power loss. The power supplies are equipped with diagnostic indicators (LEDs) that provide real-time status information, helping operators quickly identify and resolve issues.

Key Features of Series 90-30 Power Supplies:

    Status Indicator Lights (LEDs):
Every power supply is equipped with four key LEDs located on the front faceplate:
PWR (Green): Confirms the power supply is operational when lit. If off, it indicates a power supply fault or lack of power.
OK (Green): Lit when the PLC is operating normally. If off, it indicates a fault detected by the PLC.
RUN (Green): Steady on when the PLC is in RUN mode, ensuring that the system is actively executing tasks.
BATT (Red): Activates when the lithium backup battery voltage is too low. This warns the user to replace the battery before power is removed to avoid memory loss.

    Input Overvoltage Protection:
Overvoltage protection devices are integrated into all power supplies with six-terminal boards. These devices are internally connected to pin 4 on the terminal strip and typically linked to frame ground (pin 3) via a jumper strap. If overvoltage protection is not required, or it’s supplied externally, the jumper can be removed to disable this feature.

    Output Voltage Connections to Backplane:
The power supplies output multiple voltages, including +5V, +24V Relay, and +24V Isolated, all of which are connected internally to the baseplate's backplane. This ensures the voltage and power requirements for the installed modules are adequately met. The backplane provides seamless power distribution, simplifying installation and wiring.

    Overcurrent Protection:
5V logic output is electronically limited to either 3.5A for standard supplies or 7A for high-capacity models. If an overload or short circuit occurs, the power supply shuts down to prevent damage. It will continuously attempt to restart until the fault is cleared. Additionally, an internal fuse serves as a secondary protection, ensuring the supply shuts down safely before the fuse blows in most cases.

    Timing and Ride-Through Performance:
Each power supply features a Power Supply OK (PSOK) signal, which monitors the power status. In case of a brief power loss, the power supply ensures continued operation for a minimum period to allow an orderly shutdown. For example, high-capacity models like the IC693PWR321/330 have a ride-through time of at least 20 milliseconds, while others, like the IC693PWR331/332, offer 10 milliseconds of ride-through time. These timings are crucial for preventing data corruption during unexpected power interruptions.

    CPU Serial Port Connector:
Every power supply includes a 15-pin D-type female serial port. This port connects to the CPU and is used for programming or interfacing with external devices such as a GE Fanuc Hand-Held Programmer or a personal computer running programming software. The serial port is functional only when the power supply is installed in a baseplate that contains the CPU.

    Backup Battery for RAM Memory:
The lithium backup battery (IC693ACC301) is designed to maintain the contents of the CPU’s CMOS RAM. The battery is located behind a cover plate at the bottom of the power supply faceplate. If the BATT LED turns on, indicating low battery voltage, the battery must be replaced while the power is still applied. Failing to do so could result in memory corruption or loss of the PLC's application program.

    Power Supply Loading Calculation:
The power supply load is determined by the sum of internal and external loads. This includes the current drawn by the backplane, modules, and any external devices connected to the Isolated +24VDC output. The total output capacity is 30 watts, but the available +5VDC output can vary depending on the model, being either 15 or 30 watts. It’s crucial to ensure that the power supply isn’t overloaded by calculating the load from all connected components and ensuring it remains within the rated capacity.
