Confirm compatibility with the existing PLC CPU and communication module. For PROFIBUS/PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus RTU or Modbus TCP equipment, check the protocol and device role against the full model code. Matching connectors or similar housings do not make units interchangeable.

For digital I/O modules, check input/output direction, PNP/NPN wiring compatibility and output current. For analog modules, verify the 4–20 mA, 0–10 V, RTD or thermocouple signal type. Confirm that the hardware/firmware revision and required device description files match the PLC configuration.
