IC693ALG391

IC693ALG391 2-Channel Analog Current Output Module

This module provides two output channels for the Series 90-30 Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), with each channel capable of converting 12 bits of binary (digital) data into an analog output, suitable for your application. The module can provide outputs in the range of 0 to 20 mA, with a resolution of 12-bit binary (1 part in 4096). The sign bit is not used during the conversion process, and both channels are updated on every scan cycle (about 5 milliseconds). The user data in the %AQ registers is in a 16-bit 2's complement format, where the 13 most significant bits are converted into sign magnitude and sent to the module. Twelve of these bits are used by the D/A converter, and the 13th bit (sign) determines if negative data was sent to the module.

If the module receives negative data, it outputs the low end of the current range (4 mA for the 4 to 20 mA range). If an out-of-range value is entered (greater than 32767), the software will not accept the value.

This module offers two output ranges. The default range is 4 to 20 mA, with user data scaled so that a count of 0 corresponds to 4 mA, and a count of 32000 corresponds to 20 mA, with every 1000 counts representing 0.5 mA. If a RANGE jumper is installed, the output range becomes 0 to 20 mA, with 0 corresponding to 0 mA, and 32000 corresponding to 20 mA. In this case, every 800 counts represent 0.5 mA. Each output's range can be programmed individually, and the module provides full 12-bit resolution in either range.

If the CPU enters STOP mode or RESET, the module can either default to 0/4 mA or hold the last state. The selection is made using the DEF0/4 jumper on the detachable terminal board. If the jumper is not installed and a backup user supply is connected, the outputs will hold the last state. If the jumper is installed, the module defaults to 4 mA (in the 4 to 20 mA range) or 0 mA (in the 0 to 20 mA range) during STOP or RESET. One jumper is used to program both outputs for either Hold-Last-State or DEF0/4.

Each output channel can be used as a current source or a less accurate voltage source. A voltage is output at the VOUTx pin that corresponds to the current output. Selection between current or voltage output is made with a jumper on the I/O terminal board. If no jumper is installed, the module operates as a current source. If the JMPVx jumper is installed, it operates as a voltage source.

The primary power source for the module is the isolated +24 VDC supplied by the PLC power supply. Two terminals are provided on the module’s I/O terminal board for an external +24V user supply, allowing the outputs to hold their value during a power loss. An internal voltage source of approximately +24V drives the current loop outputs, and the current loop drivers on the module are of the source type. This means that positive current flows from the outputs, with user loads returned to common.

The module is equipped with an LED on the faceplate that lights up when the module's power supply is operating. The module provides electrical isolation from noise between field wiring and the backplane through the use of optical isolation. This module can be installed in any I/O slot of a 5 or 10-slot baseplate in the Series 90-30 PLC system. If an external power supply is not used, a maximum of three Analog Current Output modules can be installed per baseplate.
