Identify the device from its nameplate

The full model and order code is important when identifying the unit's hardware options. Check the auxiliary supply voltage, rated current and voltage inputs, terminal arrangement and contact ratings against the applicable documentation. Current and voltage transformer compatibility must be assessed against the installation's measurement arrangement. Our instrument transformers and IEC 61869 section explains the broader subject. When choosing an auxiliary supply, new power supplies must also meet the voltage, power and application requirements.

Assess the firmware version, available protection functions, communication option and setting software separately. Units with the same family name may have different hardware configurations. Do not assume that an existing setting file or logic configuration can be transferred directly to the purchased device. Protection settings and coordination require an engineering assessment separate from the equipment purchase.

Condition and the scope of testing

Each product page states the unit's condition and provides photographs and any available test information. A working display or access to menus alone does not establish that measurement accuracy, protection operating times and trip outputs have been tested. If a secondary injection test is reported, check which inputs and functions the description covers. Faulty products may also be offered with their faults explicitly disclosed.

Check the items included in the sale. Terminal blocks, mounting parts, communication connections and other accessories may not accompany every device. Do not assume that setting files, software licences or access credentials are included. Legacy branding and technical documentation

AREVA T&D's transmission and distribution businesses were acquired by Alstom and Schneider Electric in 2010. Consequently, the name on an older unit may differ from the company providing relevant documentation today. Depending on the model, consult the GE Vernova protection and control resources or Schneider Electric protection relay resources. Verify that any document matches the exact product code and version.

The functions and application scope of phase protection relays require a separate assessment before considering one as a replacement for a power system protection relay. Second-hand trading is not our primary business; new products and software also form a substantial part of our work.
