Multi-drive control units are used to operate and monitor several variable frequency drives (VFDs) from one central location. A compatible controller or HMI can send start/stop commands and speed references and display drive status. Conveyor, pump, fan and production line applications may require individual commands for each drive or shared commands for a group.

Selection should consider the drive make and model, communication protocol, number of connected devices and required data refresh time. Whether using Modbus RTU over RS-485 or an Ethernet-based network, a matching physical connection alone is insufficient: commands and parameter addresses must also be compatible. The control unit's supply voltage, number of ports and mounting arrangement must suit the installation.

Current, output frequency, operating status and fault information can be monitored where the drive makes these values available through its communication interface. Displaying energy consumption requires suitable data from the drive or a compatible energy meter connected to the system. The drive's response to communication loss and local/remote control priority must be defined during commissioning.

Before choosing a product, check its documentation to establish whether a remote keypad supports one drive or multiple-drive management. Supported drive counts and monitoring functions depend on the product and system configuration.
