What is Wi-Fi and How Does it Work?

Hi everyone,
Wi-Fi is a technology that allows devices to connect to a network wirelessly. It's most commonly used to connect to the internet, but it can also be used to create local networks (LANs). The term "Wi-Fi" is actually a brand name, and it's not an abbreviation of "Wireless Fidelity" as is commonly believed.
Wi-Fi operates using radio waves. A Wi-Fi network begins with a Wi-Fi router or access point. This device takes an internet connection from an internet service, usually via a cable or DSL line, and then distributes this connection wirelessly to devices in the vicinity.
Wi-Fi can operate on several different radio frequency bands. The most commonly used frequencies are 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band typically provides a wider coverage area, but can carry less data and is more easily interfered with by other devices. The 5 GHz band can carry more data and usually experiences less interference, but has a shorter coverage area.
Communication over Wi-Fi is based on various standards. These standards are determined by the Wi-Fi Alliance and are named "802.11". Different standards can operate at different speeds and on different frequency bands. Some of the more recent standards include Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n), Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), which provide faster speeds and more efficient connections.
When a device connects to a Wi-Fi network, it exchanges information over radio waves with the router or access point. This information can include data coming over the internet (like a webpage or a video stream) and data being sent to the internet by the device (like a webpage request or an email).
