How long do solar panels last?

Hello, friends of solar energy,

Solar panels are typically very durable and can last for many years. Most manufacturers offer a warranty of 25 to 30 years, which is often referred to as the panel's "useful life." However, this doesn't mean that the panels stop working after 25-30 years; they can continue to produce electricity, but their efficiency (the amount of sunlight converted into electricity) will typically decrease over time.

On average, solar panels' efficiency decreases by about 0.5% to 1% each year. This means that by the end of their 25-year warranty period, they may still be operating at around 80-85% of their original efficiency. In other words, a solar panel that initially produced 100 watts of electricity might produce 80-85 watts after 25 years.

Environmental factors can influence a solar panel's lifespan. For instance, panels can degrade faster in harsh climates, such as in areas with high temperatures, heavy snowfall, or high winds. But with proper installation and maintenance, it's not uncommon for panels to last much longer than the warranty period, often 35-40 years or more.

It's important to note that while the panels themselves can last a long time, the inverters (which convert the electricity from DC to AC) usually have a shorter lifespan and may need to be replaced every 10-15 years.
